My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA) is an Italian musical duo and outsider audiovisual artists formed by brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio in Torino, Italy, in late 1997. They are known for their experimental and avant-garde music, which they describe as 'instantaneous composition' through a unique form of improvisation. The duo has collaborated with various avant-garde artists and received praise from notable figures, including a mention in Arthur Magazine, which stated, "Italy's MY CAT IS AN ALIEN is the finest two-brother band from Italy since the end of the Great War." MCIAA's first live performance was in 1998, supporting Sonic Youth, and they have since garnered the admiration of Thurston Moore, who has collaborated with them and released some of their work on his record label. As multi-instrumentalists, My Cat Is An Alien primarily play electric and acoustic guitars, self-made string instruments, various toy instruments referred to as 'space toys,' modified electronics ('alientronics'), and a diverse array of percussion. Roberto Opalio also incorporates wordless vocalizations, adding the human voice as an additional instrument. Their artistic endeavors extend beyond music to include films and videos, audiovisual installations, poetry, drawing, photography, and painting. In September 2011, My Cat Is An Alien was featured on the cover of The Wire magazine.
