Myriam Makeba, also known as "Mama Afrika," was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer born on March 4, 1932, in Johannesburg. She passed away on November 10, 2008, in Castel Volturno, Italy. Makeba gained prominence after singing with various artists and landing a role in the musical King Kong in 1959. She later moved to London, where she met influential figures who invited her to America. Widely regarded as the first lady of South African traditional music, Makeba became an international superstar in the USA and the UK. At one time married to a notable figure, she was eventually able to return to South Africa once the political situation improved.
