The primary lead vocalist is Keith Gonzales, who also contributed to the group's visual appeal. Starting in 1982, Freddie Jackson occasionally provided main vocals before embarking on a successful solo career. The group's origin story is steeped in mystique, with Gonzales claiming that they were visited telepathically by "Merlin the Magician." Sly Randolph echoed this sentiment, stating, "We are the sons of Merlin, we were put on this earth to do his will." Jerry Anderson emphasized their commitment to providing a family-friendly show, stating, "We try not to do 'Shake your this', 'Push push', 'Boogie down'.
