A veteran of the Persian Gulf War, he rose to fame as a protégé of Master P and is recognized for his unique delivery, which draws inspiration from R&B legends like Little Richard and James Brown. His debut album, *Mystikal*, was released in 1994 through Big Boy Records. He faced conflicts with fellow New Orleans rappers signed to Cash Money Records, which led to a series of diss tracks. Mystikal's personal life significantly influenced his music, particularly the tragic death of his sister, Michelle Tyler, which inspired several songs including "Dedicated To Michelle Tyler" and "Murderer." In 1995, he signed with Jive Records and released *Mind of Mystikal*. He later joined Master P's No Limit Records in 1997, contributing to multiple projects until leaving the label in 2000.
