Nagamatzu is a musical duo consisting of Andrew Lagowski, who plays synths, guitar, and drum machines, and Stephen Jarvis, who contributes with synths, bass, and programming. The two met while attending secondary school in Ipswich, England, where they bonded over their shared appreciation for influential bands such as Human League, Tubeway Army, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Cure, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and Clock DVA. Prior to forming Nagamatzu, Andrew Lagowski was already playing drums in a local band called Silent Command. Their first recorded work was the cassette "Magog Universal," released in 1981. In 1983, Andrew Fleck joined the group for their album "Shatter Days." The name "Nagamatzu" is derived from a character in JG Ballard's "Atrocity Exhibition."
