Natasha Barrett (UK, 1972) is a composer and teacher based in Oslo, Norway. She began her serious work in electroacoustic composition while pursuing a master’s degree in analysis and electroacoustic composition at the University of Birmingham, studying under Jonty Harrison. This experience led her to work with the Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre, significantly influencing her current work and culminating in a doctoral degree in composition, supervised by Denis Smalley, which she obtained in 1998 from City University, London. Her studies were funded by the Humanities section of the British Academy, and in the same year, she received a grant from Norges forskningsråd, enabling her to serve as a resident composer at NoTAM in Oslo. Following this, she worked for a year as a senior lecturer at the music conservatory in Tromsø, Norway. As a freelance composer, Barrett's output includes works for instruments and live electronics, sound installations, dance, theatre, and animation projects, with a strong emphasis on acousmatic tape composition. In addition to her compositional work, she is actively involved in NICEM, the Norwegian section of the International Confederation for Electroacoustic Music, which promotes the performance of electroacoustic music both in Norway and internationally.
