Natural Selection was an R&B/Synth Pop duo active from 1989 to 1992, formed by Elliot Erickson. The original lineup included singer Steve Bryant (Kallsen), and they gained initial attention with a remake of a Nik Kershaw song. The single caught the interest of KDWB's Brian Phillips and created a buzz in the Minnesota/Wisconsin radio scene, acting as a catalyst for the band's rise. After Bryant's departure, he was replaced by Frederick Thomas. The duo's song remained unfinished until Erickson revisited it in 1989. A friend of the duo recorded an improvised rap in the studio, which later became part of the track. In 1990, a version featuring the rap became a local hit on Minnesota's WLOL-FM, where Erickson worked as a remix engineer. Upon signing a recording contract, the raps were re-recorded by another artist, as the original rapper was under contract with Paisley Park Records.
