Necessaries was a power pop and new wave band formed in 1978 in New York City by Ed Tomney. After receiving encouragement from John Cale, Tomney recruited drummer Jesse Chamberlain from Harry Toledo And The Rockets, bassist Ernie Brooks from the Modern Lovers, and singer Randy Gun. Initially, Chris Spedding was part of the line-up but was later replaced by Arthur Russell. The band's debut LP, Big Sky, released in 1981, was withdrawn shortly after its initial release due to Sire releasing unfinished mixes, which the band protested. The line-up included: - Ed Tomney: guitars, vocals, songwriter - Randy Gun: guitars, vocals, songwriter (left November 1979) - Chris Spedding: vocals, lead guitar, keyboards (replaced Randy Gun, left late 1980) - Ernie Brooks: bass - Jesse Chamberlain: drums - Arthur Russell: vocals, keyboards, cello (replaced Chris Spedding, mid-1981).
