Neurosis is an atmospheric sludge/post-metal band formed in December 1985 in Oakland, California. The original lineup consisted of members who previously played in a hardcore punk band. Over the years, Neurosis evolved its sound towards a sludge/doom metal style, incorporating influences from dark ambient, industrial music, and elements of folk music. The band has been operating its own independent record label since the late 1990s. In August 2022, it was announced that Scott Kelly had been expelled from the band in 2019. Neurosis made a comeback on March 20, 2026, with a new album and the addition of Aaron Turner to the lineup. The current lineup includes Dave Edwardson on bass and vocals, Jason Roeder on drums, Steve Von Till on guitar and vocals, Noah Landis on keyboards and synthesizers, and Aaron Turner on guitar and vocals. Former members include Scott Kelly, Chad Salter, Pete the Roadie, Simon McIlroy, Adam Kendall, Pete Inc., and Josh Graham. The band also has technical personnel, including live sound engineer Dave Clark. Neurosis released their first demo in July 1986, which was self-released on cassette.
