New Edition is an R&B group that originated in Boston in 1978, achieving peak popularity during the 1980s. They are considered pioneers of the boy band movement that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, influencing later groups. The classic lineup at their height in 1983 included Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ralph Tresvant. They gained early fame with hits such as "Candy Girl" (1983), "Cool It Now," and "Mr. Telephone Man" (both in 1984). Bobby Brown left the group in late 1985 to pursue a solo career, and the remaining members continued as a quartet until they added Johnny Gill for their 1988 album, Heart Break. After a hiatus in 1990, during which members engaged in solo projects, all six members reunited in 1996-1997 for the album Home Again. However, the follow-up tour was canceled due to the departure of both Brown and Bivins. The group has had various reunions since, primarily featuring the lineup from 1987-1990, with occasional appearances by Bobby Brown. Their last studio album, One Love, was released in 2004. By 2010, two offshoots of New Edition were active: Bell Biv Devoe and Heads of State, which included Brown, Tresvant, and Gill. On May 3, 201
