New World is an Australian pop band that originated in Brisbane in 1965 before relocating to the UK. The group initially began as The Folksingers, featuring John “Fuzzy” Lee on guitar and baritone vocals, born on March 9, 1944, in Ashtead, Surrey, England, and Mel Noonan on guitar and bass vocals, born on November 10, 1943, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Lee had a background as a carpenter, while Noonan worked as a television technician. They performed at various clubs in Brisbane. In 1965, Robert Elford joined the band, contributing guitar and tenor vocals; he was born on April 13, 1932, in Townsville, Queensland. The group participated in the national TV talent quest show The Holden Showcase for three consecutive years, reaching the finals each time. In 1966, they rebranded as The New World Trio and recorded the David Kirkcaldie composition "What The World Needs" b/w "A Wise Proverb," which included narration. This 45 r.p.m. record was distributed by RCA, with proceeds going to the Australian Freedom From Hunger Campaign. Around 1968, Elford was replaced by John Kane, born on April 18, 1946, in Glasgow, Scotland.
