Newtrament is an influential figure in the L.A. skateboarding and London electronic music scenes, known for his work as a DJ and MC. Inspired by Afrika Bambaataa's social consciousness, he aimed to support any London crew eager to make their mark. As the founder of Rock Box, a precursor to raves, he played a key role in establishing original warehouse jams, collaborating with notable figures such as Danny, Frank, Karl, and Sam Bullawella from Renegade Soundwave, as well as Jeremy Healy and the Circus. Newtrament often showcased his skills on wheels, cutting and scratching alongside his formidable Rock Box team, which included MC Sweet Pea (also known as She Rocker), MC Dupe, and the now-prolific roots artist Ras Simeon Judah. The core of the Rock Box crew also featured Fresh Ski and the elusive Doctor Fate (also known as Cat or Leo). For a considerable time, Newtrament traveled frequently between London and Bristol, originally residing as a squatter in Stoke Newington, North London, before moving to Philadelphia in 1980. There, he was inspired by the performances of Sugarhill Records artists and became deeply influenced by rap music, leading to a blend of myth and reality in his artistic narrative.
