The Ngozi Family was a foundational Zambian rock band formed in Lusaka in 1975, led by guitarist and vocalist Paul Nyirongo, better known as Paul Ngozi. The group was a primary exponent of the "Zamrock" genre, characterized by a fusion of heavy psychedelic rock, garage rock, and traditional rhythms. Their sound featured prominent fuzz-distorted guitar work and lyrics addressing the social and economic issues of post-independence Zambia. The original core lineup included Paul Ngozi (lead guitar, vocals), along with members on bass, drums, and rhythm guitar. The band's recording history began in the mid-1970s, with sessions prioritizing high-energy performance. Although released around 1976, their album was recorded at Sapra Studios in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1974. This was followed by their debut studio album, released in 1976. During this prolific period, they released several albums on local independent labels, including titles such as i (1976), (1977), and (1977). In addition to their studio output, the Ngozi Family was a significant touring act, frequently performing in community halls and social clubs throughout the Copperbelt and Lusaka. They also performed internationally, including a notable set at the Nairobi International Casino, which was captured on a live recording. In early 1978, they traveled to London, England, to record the album. As the Zambian music market shifted toward the Kalindula style
