Flutist, composer, and bandleader Nicole Mitchell founded the Black Earth Ensemble in 1998 as a creative platform to explore original music rooted in the African American experience. Blending free jazz, contemporary chamber music, blues, and Afrofuturism, the ensemble reflects Mitchell’s vision of artistic freedom and collective expression. With acclaimed recordings on labels such as Delmark and FPE, the group has earned international recognition for its adventurous sound, social consciousness, and imaginative performances that celebrate resilience, spirituality, and innovation in modern jazz.
