Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, arranger, and civil rights activist, born on February 21, 1933, in Tryon, North Carolina. She passed away on April 21, 2003, in Carry-le-Rouet, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, at the age of 70. From an early age, Nina showcased her musical talent by giving piano recitals after playing at her local church. Her childhood piano lessons were funded by her mother's employer and a local fund established by her music teacher, who recognized her exceptional ability. At 17, she moved to Philadelphia, where she taught piano and performed to support her studies at New York's prestigious Juilliard School of Music. To provide for her family, she worked in a bar in Atlantic City, where she was also required to sing, gaining a devoted following. Her recording of Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" became a US Top 20 hit, elevating her career and leading to performances on larger stages. Throughout her career, Nina's repertoire included numerous civil rights anthems, as she was a passionate and prominent supporter of the movement. In the 1970s, she left the United States, living in places such as Barbados, Africa, and the Netherlands before eventually settling in France, where she died from cancer in 2003. In recognition of her contributions to music and civil rights, Nina Simone was awarded a Grammy
