Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated as NIN and stylized as NIИ) is an industrial rock band formed in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. The band was created by Trent Reznor, who has served as the main producer, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and sole member for 28 years. In December 2016, another member officially joined the band. Nine Inch Nails explores a wide range of rock styles and other genres that incorporate electronic sounds, leading to significant variations in their albums. Despite these changes, NIN albums share identifiable characteristics, including recurring leitmotifs, chromatic melodies, dissonance, terraced dynamics, and common lyrical themes. The band is particularly known for blending industrial elements with pop sensibilities in their early work, which played a crucial role in bringing the industrial genre into the mainstream. However, both genre purists and Trent Reznor have refrained from labeling NIN strictly as an industrial band. In 2020, Nine Inch Nails was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
