Nino Ferrer was an Italian-born French singer-songwriter, painter, and author, born on August 15, 1934, in Genoa, Italy, and passed away on August 13, 1998, in Saint-Cyprien, France. He began his musical career in the '50s, playing double bass in a jazz trio. Ferrer is perhaps best known in France for his string of comedic hits in the '60s and in Italy for RnB protest songs such as "La Pella Nera." He had a complicated relationship with the music industry, feeling that his public persona and recognition were at odds with his artistic aspirations. His 1975 classic "Le Sud" exemplifies this relationship; it became a million-selling single in France, overshadowing the English language album it was taken from, which only achieved cult status. Ferrer continued to release music during the '80s and '90s, often collaborating with other artists. He became a French citizen in 1989 and tragically committed suicide in 1998.
