The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is a US American country rock band that has been active since its founding in Long Beach, California, in 1966. Over the years, the band has undergone numerous membership changes, with at least a dozen different members. Notably, from 1976 to 1981, the band performed and recorded under a different name. Key members since the early days include singer-guitarist and drummer, while multi-instrumentalist was part of the band from 1966 to 1986 and returned in 2001. Keyboardist Bob Carpenter joined the group in 1977. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is often recognized as a significant influence in the development of contemporary country and roots music.
