Noh Mercy was a pioneering band formed in San Francisco in 1977, consisting of two women: Esmerelda and Tony Hotel. Embracing the motto "No Boys On Guitars," they sought to challenge the male-dominated rock 'n' roll scene. The band combined the angularity of Devo, the punk/poet attitude of Patti Smith, and the art spectacle of Roxy Music, all distilled into a minimalist sound centered on voice and drums. Noh Mercy was ahead of its time, foreshadowing the queer rebellion of Riot Grrrl and the art minimalism of the early 21st century by decades.
