Not Drowning, Waving is a musical group formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1983, although they first performed as a group in 1984. Their music blends elements of rock, ambient music, and world music, with lyrics that explore characteristically Australian themes, including landscapes, people, seasons, and political issues like Indonesia's invasion of East Timor. The band's name is inspired by Stevie Smith's poem "Not Waving but Drowning." The group disbanded in 1994, with some members, including Bridie and a cellist, going on to form another group. In 2005, Not Drowning, Waving reunited for a performance at the WOMADelaide Festival and has since reformed intermittently, including shows and a new album set for release in 2025.
