Nu Shooz is an American freestyle/R&B group based in Portland, Oregon, fronted by husband-and-wife duo John Smith and Valerie Day. The group's name originated from a need to come up with a title before an early gig. Initially, they considered the name "The Shoes," but upon discovering it was already taken, their bass player suggested "New Shoes," which they creatively spelled as "Nu Shooz" to give it a more 'rock' feel.
