Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare, formed in Naples in 1967 by Carlo D'Angiò, is a folk group that initially focused on popular canzone napoletana and American spirituals. Significant changes occurred in 1970 when they collaborated with musician and musicologist Roberto de Simone, who brought his extensive research on popular and ancient folk traditions. This led to the inclusion of members Peppe Barra, Patrizio Trampetti, Fausta Vetere, and Nunzio Areni, who aimed to rediscover and promote the traditions of the Campania region. The group's breakthrough came with their remarkable success at the Spoleto Festival in 1972 and 1974, which propelled them onto the international stage. Since then, they have participated in numerous prestigious festivals across Europe and beyond, including those in Edinburgh, Helsinki, Berlin, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Zurich, Salzburg, Paris, Athens, Israel, Sydney, Hong Kong, and many others. In addition to their musical endeavors, the group has also been involved in theatrical productions, contributing to shows like La Cantata dei Pastori, La Canzone di Zeza, La Gatta Cenerentola, and La Perla Reale. Their work earned them an invitation from Eduardo De Filippo to perform at the San Ferdinando Theatre in Naples.
