Ofege is a legendary Nigerian band formed in the early 1970s by a group of teenage hippies at St. Gregory's College in Lagos, Nigeria. Influenced by the guitar work of artists like Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, as well as the rhythms of Osibisa, Ofege drew inspiration from local acts such as BLO, Monomono, The Funkees, and Ofo The Black Company. Their debut album, "Try And Love," was recorded in 1973 while the members were still in high school, showcasing their vibrant blend of harmonies, hooks, and fuzz. Despite only releasing four albums by 1978 and lacking recognition outside Nigeria, Ofege's music was rediscovered in the early 2000s. Their notable album, "The Last Of The Origins," features a funk-rock sound with psychedelic elements, complex rhythms, and African influences, highlighted by impressive instrumental sections. The band members included Melvin Noks (Lead Vocals/Rhythm), Paul Alade (Bass Guitar), Mike Meme (Drums), Soga Benson (Lead/Solo Guitar), Felix Ijeh (Rhythm/Tenor Guitar), Dapo Olumide (Keyboards), and Felix Inneh (Percussionist). Ofege's music is characterized by its incredible drive and psychedelic grooves, despite the lyrics being less inspired.
