Ola Belle Reed was an American folk and bluegrass singer, songwriter, and banjo player, born on August 17, 1916, in Grassy Creek, North Carolina. She passed away on August 16, 2002, in Rising Sun, Maryland. Reed grew up in Ashe County, North Carolina, and, along with her brother and husband, established the New River Ranch in Maryland and Sunset Park in Pennsylvania, which were popular venues for country and mountain music, serving fellow displaced mountaineers. During the 1960s, she gained recognition in the folk revival for her powerful voice and clawhammer banjo playing, as well as her original songwriting that reflected her traditional roots and string ideals. Her songs "I've Endured" and "High on a Mountain" have become standards in bluegrass and Americana music. In 1986, she was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship.
