Oleta Adams is an American soul, gospel, and jazz singer and pianist, born on May 4, 1953, in Seattle, Washington. She grew up in Yakima, where she spent her formative years singing in the church choir, playing the piano, and directing. After rejecting a scholarship to study opera at a Lutheran university, she pursued a career in the music industry but faced initial rejections from music executives who favored disco music at the time. Undeterred, she moved to Kansas City, where she performed at hotels. Her big break came when she was discovered and recruited for a 1989 album. The single from this album features Adams on vocals and became a Top 40 hit across ten territories, including the U.K. and America.
