Ollie & The Nightingales originally formed as a gospel group known as the Gospel Writer Juniors. They recorded for the Pepper label before changing their name to the Dixie Nightingles and subsequently recorded for Nashboro and the gospel subsidiary Chalice. Eventually, they transitioned to secular R&B music and adopted the name Ollie & The Nightingales. During this transition, group member Willie Neal departed, and former member Quincy Billops joined the group.
