Omer Coleman Jr. was born on September 4, 1953, in Kansas City, Missouri. In the late 1970s, he operated a mobile disco that evolved to incorporate live instruments, featuring a spectacular stage show with smoke and light effects, along with unique stage props, including a spaceship-styled car. This stage presence inspired him to create his first solo album in the early 1980s under the moniker "Starship Commander Woo-Woo." The album achieved a modest amount of local success, prompting him to establish his own label, named after his first name spelled backwards. Omer released two electro-styled tracks reminiscent of artists like Egyptian Lover and other groups from that era, eventually scoring a local hit. He independently wrote, recorded, produced, and released all of his records. By the late 1990s, after experiencing frustrations with radio promotions, he shifted towards a gospel sound, working with young talents and helping to raise awareness for gospel-based hip-hop artists. Omer remained active in the community until his passing on November 17, 2020.
