Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) is an English electronic band formed in 1978 in Wirral, Merseyside, by Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey. The band initially went through earlier names such as 'VCL XI' and 'Hitlerz Underpantz' before playing their first gig at Eric's in Liverpool. They gained popularity in the UK after moving from Factory Records to the Virgin-owned label DinDisc, starting with the 1980 release "Messages." In that year, drummer Malcolm Holmes and synth player Dave Hughes became full members, with Hughes later replaced by Martin Cooper. Humphreys departed in 1989, allowing McCluskey to retain the band's name. OMD made a comeback in 1991 with the hit "Sailing On The Seven Seas" and the successful album "Sugar Tax." After a period as a solo act, McCluskey announced a reunion on January 1, 2006, and in 2007, the classic lineup reunited for tours and released the live album "OMD Live: Architecture & Morality & More" in 2008. They have since released four studio albums and toured regularly. In 2023, OMD achieved their highest charting album to date with "Bauhaus Staircase," debuting at No. 2 on the UK Charts.
