L'Orchestre Afrisa International was established in 1965 following a split from the band Orchestre African Fiesta, which was founded in 1963. The split arose from tensions between Rochereau and other members. After the separation, Rochereau renamed his band "Orchestre African Fiesta 1966," and subsequently "L'Orchestre African Fiesta National Le Peuple." He also created a new label, originally called Éditions Flash - Rochereau Chante, which was later renamed ISA (International Service Artistique). The name Afrisa combines "African" with his label's name, ISA. Meanwhile, Dr. Nico chose to perform under a different moniker through his own label. This history serves to distinguish the band from its earlier incarnation (1963-1965) and their subsequent names after 1965.
