Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, originally founded as Orchestre Poly-Disco in 1968 in Cotonou, Benin (formerly Dahomey), is a renowned band known for its vibrant and eclectic music. The name "T.P." stands for the French "Tout Puissant," meaning "All Mighty." The original lineup included Melome Clement (founder and vocals), Bentho Gustave (bass), Bernard 'Papillon' Zoundegnon (guitar), among others. In search of a soul singer, Bentho and Papillon recruited Vincent Ahehehinnou from Daho Jazz, a band with limited prospects. After navigating changes in producers and financiers, they eventually rebranded as Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou in 1969 after signing with a record label. Over the next twelve years, they released numerous successful records and embarked on triumphant tours. However, tensions arose when Vincent Ahehehinnou left the group on May 28, 1978, following disagreements with Adissa Seidou, who sought to diminish Melome Clement's role in the band. Vincent faced death threats and voodoo rites in response to his protests. Although the group's popularity waned in the 1980s, they continued to perform, with various members coming and going.
