Orquesta Narvaez was a Puerto Rican band that epitomized the Salsa sounds of the 1970s in New York City. Known for their heavy trombone lines, they were pioneers of what is now referred to as “salsa dura.” Led by vocalist Armando Vasquez, the band achieved moderate success with their sole vinyl recording, "Reincarnation," released on the Tico label in 1975. Their song “La Mafia” showcases a sound reminiscent of Willie Colon's legendary arrangements, with lead vocals that echo early Hector LaVoe. However, Orquesta Narvaez also developed a unique sound across several other tracks on the album. This vinyl is considered a rare gem for collectors of “salsa classica” and is somewhat pricey but deemed worth it. There are rumors that the band is back in the studio, with a new recording expected in the spring of 2012.
