Oscar Peterson was a renowned Canadian jazz pianist, composer, and band leader, born on August 15, 1925, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He passed away on December 23, 2007, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Peterson received classical piano education before transitioning to jazz, primarily performing in Canadian nightclubs in Toronto and Montreal. In 1949, after encouragement from American colleagues, he made a notable appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York as part of the Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP), which was a tremendous success. He initially collaborated with various musicians, forming his first trio in 1952, which included different guitarists before replacing the guitar with drums at the end of the 1950s. Throughout his career, Peterson toured extensively in Europe and recorded with numerous prominent figures in jazz. His playing style was characterized by explosive ornamentation in phrasing, a dynamic improvisational spirit, and exceptional artistic technique, all while maintaining a clear and structured approach to harmony, phrasing, and rhythm.
