Oscar Valdambrini was an Italian composer and jazz musician born on May 11, 1924, in Turin, Italy. He began his musical journey as a violinist at the local conservatory, earning his diploma in 1941. In 1936, he also started studying trumpet, and in 1948, he decided to pursue a career as a professional jazz musician after a jam session with Rex Stewart. In 1955, Valdambrini founded the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet, which later became a sextet, and it became one of the most renowned groups in the history of Italian jazz, lasting well into the 1980s. Throughout his career, he collaborated and recorded with several prominent American musicians, including Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, Lars Gullin, Buddy Collette, Helen Merrill, Duke Ellington, and Maynard Ferguson. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a member of the RAI Orchestra, which hosted radio concerts featuring guest stars such as Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli, and Freddie Hubbard. Valdambrini passed away on December 26, 1996, in Rome, Italy. He was a quiet and reserved man, recognized as one of the founding fathers of modern Italian jazz.
