Otis Brown Jr. was born on March 14, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, and later moved to Marianna, Arkansas, near the Mississippi Delta. Due to a childhood case of asthma, his mother took the family to Chicago for treatment at Cook County Hospital. Growing up in the Englewood neighborhood, which was then a vibrant cultural hub, Brown mingled with local artists such as Tyrone Davis and Major Lance, and opened for acts like the Isley Brothers and Jr. Walker & the All-Stars. As his career progressed, he collaborated with his mother's boyfriend, Browly Guy, and his uncle King Bevil to establish the Ole label, releasing a tribute to Chicago's South Side. However, the label was short-lived, producing only a few singles before disputes led to its dissolution. Brown went on to create his own labels, including Lujuna, Gossip Tree, and ExSpectMore, where he continued to release music for himself, his son, and the groups he managed before eventually leaving the music industry.
