Overpass is a band that emerged from the California punk scene, originally part of the influential SST label in the 1980s with their previous group, Slovenly. After Slovenly recorded its last album in 1992, three members—guitarist and singer Tom Watson, bassist Scott Ziegler, and ex-drummer Rob Holzman—decided to pursue a more cohesive and interactive approach to songwriting as a group. They released their self-titled debut album on SST subsidiary New Alliance, followed by a second album, Manhattan (Beach), which was completed in 1994.
