Panayiotis Kokoras is a Greek musician, composer, and teacher, born in 1974. His work spans a variety of forms, including acoustic compositions, mixed media, and tape music/musique concrète. An internationally recognized composer and innovator in computer music, he currently serves as an Associate Professor of composition and the director of the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia (CEMI) at the University of North Texas. Kokoras studied classical guitar and composition in Athens, Greece, and York, England, and has taught for many years at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. His sound compositions utilize sound as the sole structural unit, and he aims to achieve a "holophonic musical texture," where each independent sound (phonos) contributes equally to the overall synthesis (holos). His music, both instrumental and electroacoustic, emphasizes a "virtuosity of sound," focusing on the precise production of varied sound possibilities and the clear distinction between timbres to express musical ideas and structures. Kokoras's compositional work is also influenced by research in Music Information Retrieval, Extended techniques, Tactile sound, Hyperidiomaticity, Robotics, and Sound and Consciousness.
