Paolo Angeli is a guitarist and vocalist born in 1970 in Palau, a small port in northern Sardinia. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and moved to Bologna in 1989, where he collaborated with various contemporary music ensembles, focusing on collective composition and improvisation. In 1993, he met Giovanni Scanu, a renowned Sardinian guitar player, who introduced him to the traditional forms of canto a chitarra gallurese e logudorese, old songs in the Sardinian dialects traditionally accompanied by guitar. This interaction between avant-garde and popular tradition led to the creation of Angeli's Sardinian prepared-guitar, an innovative instrument with 18 strings that combines elements of a baritone guitar, cello, and drums, featuring hammers, pedals, and variable pitch propellers. Since 1997, Angeli has performed with his modified guitar at major festivals and theaters worldwide, including Europe, Japan, Australia, North and South America, Russia, and Africa. He holds a degree in ethnomusicology and has digitalized the Archivio Mario Cervo, the most significant collection of Sardinian records and traditional music. As a researcher, he published "Canto in Re," a historical analysis of the cantu a chittera. Alongside Nanni Angeli, he serves as the artistic director of Isole che parlano, an international arts festival held in Palau since 1996.
