Papa Wemba, born on June 14, 1949, in Lubefu, Kasaï-Oriental, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was a renowned Congolese singer, songwriter, performer, producer, and actor. Affectionately known as "Kuru Yaka" and "Foridoles," he co-founded a music group in 1969 and began his career with them before leaving in 1974. He was the first African artist to achieve a golden record with his album "Emotion" and was instrumental in launching the careers of several artists through his band. On April 24, 2016, Papa Wemba tragically collapsed on stage during the 8th edition of FEMUA in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and passed away at the age of 66. Following his death, a national mourning period of three days was declared in the DRC. With over 40 years in the industry, he became one of Africa's most popular and influential musicians in world music.
