**Papa Wemba** Real Name: Papa Wemba Born: June 14, 1949, Lubefu, Kasaï-Oriental, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Died: April 23, 2016, Abidjan, Ivory Coast (aged 66) Papa Wemba, affectionately known as the "Kuru Yaka" and "Foridoles," was a renowned Congolese singer, songwriter, performer, producer, and actor. In 1969, he co-founded a musical group and began his career with them, leaving in 1974. He was the first African artist to achieve a golden record with his album "Emotion" and was instrumental in launching the careers of several artists with his band. On April 24, 2016, Papa Wemba tragically collapsed on stage during the 8th edition of the FEMUA, organized by his group, just 20 minutes into the show. Following his death, a national mourning of three days was declared in the DRC. With over 40 years in the music industry, he was one of Africa's most popular and prominent musicians in world music.
