Papete, born in 1947 in Bacabal, Maranhão, is the youngest of four renowned Brazilian percussionists, alongside Airto Moreira, Naná Vasconcelos, and Anunciacão. Together, they have established a foundational school that has influenced musicians worldwide. Papete recognizes the significance of a percussionist's role, emphasizing the need to master the specialized techniques and languages of each instrument. He skillfully plays traditional instruments like the berimbau and drums, while also innovatively extracting new sounds from them.
