Paradise Lost is a metal band formed in 1988 in Halifax, UK. Along with their country-mates, they are credited with creating the death/doom subgenre and have also played a significant role in pioneering what is known today as gothic metal. Throughout their career, the band has consistently surprised fans and critics with their desire for reinvention and experimentation, often collaborating with producers from various musical genres and refusing to repeat themselves to avoid stagnation. Initially, they established themselves as one of death/doom's leading forces, but by 1993, they began to move away from these influences, opting for a more melancholy and slightly goth-influenced mainstream sound. This trend continued with their extremely popular yet controversial releases, gradually losing most of their metallic ties on albums such as "One Second" and "Host." However, with the 2002 album "Symbol of Life," the band started to revert to their goth rock and heavy metal roots, and subsequent releases have further explored gothic and heavy metal territory.
