Pastor T. L. Barrett, born on January 13, 1944, is a preacher and musician from Chicago's South Side. He led a youth choir during the late 1960s and early 1970s and is best known for recording the classic gospel record "Like A Ship…(Without A Sail)." Although he released several gospel albums in the 1970s, he remained largely unknown outside of Chicago until a resurgence of interest in his music occurred in the 2010s. In 1989, Barrett faced legal issues when he was charged with orchestrating a pyramid scheme, encouraging his congregants to contribute to economic development fundraisers that raised over two million dollars. By 1998, he was ordered to repay 1.2 million dollars, which he successfully did.
