Patrice Rushen is a Grammy Award-winning American R&B, Disco, and Jazz vocalist, composer, and classically trained pianist. Born on September 30, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, she is also a skilled keyboards player, producer, music director, and educator. In addition to the piano, Rushen plays various instruments including the flute, clarinet, and different types of percussion. Her signature sound is a sophisticated blend of R&B, jazz, and funk. At the age of 17, she and her band won a competition that led to a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, which resulted in a recording contract with Prestige Records in 1973. After releasing three albums and establishing herself as a sought-after session player, she signed with Elektra Records in 1978.
