Patti Drew was an American soul singer and songwriter born on December 29, 1944, in Charleston, South Carolina. She grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, before moving to the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois. During her teenage years, she attended Evanston High and sang with her mother and sisters in church. Her mother, a domestic worker, introduced her daughters to Maury Lathowers, a regional promoter, who invited them to audition and subsequently signed them to Capitol Records as a group. The group recorded "Tell Him," which was a local hit and reached the lower echelons of the national charts. In 1966, Drew signed as a solo artist and released a new version of "Tell Him" as her first single, achieving modest success. Over her career, she had three charting singles and released three albums before stepping away from the industry in 1971. She made a brief return in 1975 with a release on Carl Davis and E. Rodney Jones' label. In the 1980s, she reunited with Carlton Black in the group Front Line and performed in the Evanston area. Drew passed away on June 18, 2025.
