Paul Desmond was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for composing "Take Five" for the Dave Brubeck Quartet. He was born on November 25, 1924, in San Francisco, California, and passed away on May 30, 1977, in New York City, New York. Desmond played with the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1951 until 1967 and also collaborated with various artists throughout his career. He changed his birth name because he felt it wasn't suited for a musician. Desmond died in 1977 from lung cancer.
