Paul Motian was an American jazz drummer and percussionist, born on March 25, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He passed away on November 22, 2011, in Manhattan, NY, USA. Motian played a significant role in liberating jazz drummers from strict time-keeping duties. He first gained prominence in the late 1950s as part of a piano trio and later became a regular member of a pianist's band for about a decade, around 1967 to 1976. In the early 1970s, Motian began his career as a bandleader, forming notable groups such as a longstanding trio with guitarist and saxophonist, and another group where he collaborated mainly with younger musicians on interpretations of bebop standards.
