Pearl Bailey was an American singer, actress, songwriter, and author, born on March 29, 1918, in Newport News, Virginia. She passed away on August 17, 1990, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 72. Pearl was married to a drummer from 1952 until her death in 1990 and was the mother of a jazz singer. In the early 1940s, Pearl began her career as a dancer and later transitioned to singing in New York, touring with the Cootie Williams orchestra. She became a featured singer in nightclubs, radio, and television, and worked as a band vocalist from 1933 to 1945. Throughout her career, she appeared in movies, television shows, and Broadway productions. Notably, in 1976, Pearl Bailey became the first African-American to receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on October 17, 1988.
