Pedro Maia is a Portuguese filmmaker born in Vila do Conde and based in Berlin. He primarily works with 16mm and 8mm film, exploring the boundaries and aesthetics of analog cinema by manipulating raw materials and challenging traditional processes. His innovative approach continually expands the visual and technological heritage of classic film methods. Maia's work has been showcased at prestigious film festivals, institutions, and galleries, including The Barbican Center, Serralves Museum, Tokyo Contemporary Art Museum, Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimental Art, MACBA Barcelona, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Mostra São Paulo, and Curtas Vila do Conde, among others. In addition to his film work, Maia has collaborated on projects with artists such as Patti Smith, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Lucrecia Dalt. He has also performed solo and collaborated with musicians like Vessel, Shackleton, Visionist, Shapednoise, Jacaszek, Shxcxchcxsh, Tropic of Cancer, Craig Leon, Lee Ranaldo, and Fennesz. His performances have been featured in leading festivals such as Sonar, Unsound, Berlin Atonal, All Tomorrow’s Party, Mutek, and Dekmantel, as well as in renowned institutions like CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Eye Film Museum, and the Contemporary Cultural Center of Valencia.
