Pere Ubu, formed in late 1975 in Cleveland, Ohio, is a band that evolved from the city's protopunk scene. The group was initiated by David Thomas (aka Crocus Behemoth) and guitarist Peter Laughner, who tragically passed away in 1977. They gained recognition for their early singles, including "Heart Of Darkness" and "Final Solution," which expressed a sense of restless angst. By 1978, their albums, The Modern Dance and Dub Housing, showcased a blend of aggressive rock and superior musicianship, influenced by Thomas's upbringing as a Jehovah's Witness. Despite internal conflicts leading to a split, Thomas regrouped the band for three more albums through 1982, including The Art Of Walking, which featured challenging sonic experimentation. After some members performed with Thomas's Wooden Birds, Pere Ubu was revived for 1988's The Tenement Year. They then released the innovative Cloudland in 1989, which incorporated mainstream textures treated as found sounds, followed by the eccentric Worlds In Collision. Eventually, Ubu shifted back to quirkier styles with Story Of My Life. In 1995, they released Ray Gun Suitcase through Tim Kerr Records, blending their signature vicious rock, pop elements, and art-damaged identities, along with a series of multimedia-enhanced EPs.
