The Persuasions are an a-cappella group that originated in Brooklyn, New York, in 1962. The group consists of five members: Jerry Lawson, Jimmy Hayes, Joe Russell, Jayotis Washington, and Herbert “Toubo” Rhoad. They came together by chance while harmonizing on outdoor basketball courts after pick-up games. In 1968, they secured their first record deal with Frank Zappa, who discovered them over the phone when David Dashev called him from a New York studio, insisting, “you’ve got to hear this.”
